Epistemic Collapse
Synthetic media and persuasive agents dissolve shared facts; institutions lose the ability to coordinate.
The scenario
Every video, voice and document can be fabricated at zero cost by anyone. Persuasion agents run at the scale of populations. The result is not that people believe lies but that they stop believing anything, including true warnings, which cripples the response to every other branch on this map.
Preconditions
- Cheap, undetectable synthetic media (already true)
- Persuasive agents deployed at scale
- No widely adopted provenance infrastructure
Leading indicators
- Trust-in-media and trust-in-institutions surveys
- Deepfake incidents in elections and finance
- Adoption of content-provenance standards
Tripwires
Observable thresholds. When one crosses, the scenario's status changes and the weekly re-run is brought forward.
Playbook
- Provenance by default (C2PA-style) in cameras, platforms and government communications
- Liability for platforms that amplify unlabelled synthetic content at scale
- Media literacy as core curriculum
- Track provenance adoption and incident rates.
individuals
- Verify through a second channel before acting on anything urgent; agree code words with family for voice calls
- Prefer sources that sign their content
organizations
- Sign your communications; train staff on voice-clone fraud
- Pre-agree verification for any payment or access change
governments
- Signed official communications; rapid-response verification service
- Election infrastructure for the synthetic-media era
- Trust rebuilds through verifiable institutions, not through debunking; invest in the former.
Probability history
Every change is logged with its reason and the signals that drove it. Moves are bounded per week; a jump beyond the bound is flagged as a shock.
Disagree with our range? Set yours. Estimates feed a community view that appears once enough people weigh in, and the weekly run reads the gap between our number and yours.
Seed estimate. Ongoing since 2024; EU Art. 50 transparency duties now apply but high-risk rules were deferred. No single signal this week; the branch is on watch because the capability is universal and the defense (provenance) is not.
